Clinical Significance

Description

Lipoprotein-associated phospholipase A2 (Lp-PLA2) is produced by inflammatory cells and circulates primarily bound to low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and is to a lesser extent associated with high-density lipoprotein (HDL) in human plasma. LDL oxidation is known as an early key event in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. Elevated Lp-PLA2 levels have been found in atherosclerotic plaques and rupture lesions.
Serum Lp-PLA2 level has higher sensitivity in predicting the vulnerability of the coronary atherosclerotic plaque than hs-CRP. In combination with hs-CRP, Lp-PLA2 is considered as a new biomarker to predict the presence of vulnerable plaque and vascular dysfunction.
Results are given in nanograms per milliliter (ng/mL). The normal range for Lp-PLA2 is less than 200 ng/mL.
