Introduction to Progastrin releasing peptide (ProGRP)

Progastrin releasing peptide (ProGRP) is the precursor of gastrin releasing peptide (GRP). It is the initial product encoded by the GRP gene and is commonly found in nerve fibers, non-gastric antral tissues, neuroendocrine cells of the brain and lungs.
ProGRP can be alternatively spliced to produce three isoforms with a common C-terminal sequence and can be stably expressed in plasma. At present, ProGRP has high sensitivity and specificity to small cell lung cancer (SCLC) as a tumor marker, and it is also an important factor for the early diagnosis, prognostic and curative effect analysis of SCLC. ProGRP does not produce or produces very little in benign and other non-small cell lung cancers or lung lesions, thus makes it a high diagnostic value for SCLC. Studies have shown that the specificity of ProGRP for diagnosing SCLC is up to 88.89%, and the sensitivity is 63.16% for early stage SCLC. The combined detection of ProGRP, NSE, CYFRA21-1 and other indicators will help to further improve the diagnostic accuracy for small cell lung cancer.
